Port Kembla Steelworks Site Tour

We are excited to announce a pre-summit tour to BlueScope Steel in Port Kembla for a truly sensory ‘steelmaking’ experience.

BlueScope has a long and proud history as an efficient, trusted and innovative steelmaker in the Illawarra. In Australia, it evolved from the coming together of many companies that pioneered the Australian steel industry in the early 20th Century including The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP), John Lysaght (Australia) Pty Ltd (Lysaght) and Australian Iron and Steel Limited (AIS) and have been many others since.

Overview

Join us for this exciting tour with fellow Industrial Decarbonisation Summit 2025 delegates and see first-hand the processes and technologies involved in steel making and learn how BlueScope are transitioning its operations to a lower carbon footprint. Explore the Port Kembla Steelworks site and witness massive machinery, towering structures, locomotives and extensive raw materials stockpiles. Turn up the heat as you climb the stairs to visit the colossal Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant and the continuous slab caster, providing the best vantage point for observing steel production – a truly incredible experience. In the tour’s final stage, you will visit the Hot Strip Mill, where steel slabs are reheated and rolled into coils in a noisy, action-packed process.

Wednesday 26 March

10:00AM Board the coach from Sydney Central Station
12:00PM Arrive at the Port Kembla Visitors Centre and enjoy a light lunch
12:30PM Decarbonisation presentation (Matt McKenzie, Head of Energy & Carbon, BlueScope TBC)
12:45PM Full PPE and headsets provided
1:00PM Steelworks site tour accompanied by several BlueScope managers and technical experts
3:00PM Return to the Visitors Centre to return PPE
3:15PM Depart for Sydney
5:00PM (Approx) Arrive back at Central Station

 

This tour has limited places and is only available to Summit delegates with one registration per organisation. A waiting list will be created when the allocation is exhausted. Should more than one person per organisation register for the site visit, the EEC will be in touch to confirm which delegate will represent your organisation and cancel any other site visit registrations.
